TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Broken tent pole

Postby emma_melbourne » Wed 13 Dec, 2023 10:25 am

My best friend borrowed my camping equipment for a weekend hiking with her new boyfriend - and they managed to break one of the tent poles.

It’s a Sierra Designs (USA) Flash 2 FL tent that the company no longer makes. And even if they did have a tent pole - they don’t ship or sell anything to Australia. (I bought the tent off somewhere like BackCountry USA from memory but this was years ago)

I love the tent.

Any thought on fixing it?

Professional? https://www.remoterepairs.com.au/collec ... placements
You can probably save a little cost by removing the shock cord down the centre of the poles (number the sections at the joints so you can get it back together in the right order). Send then both the broken bit and the section it mates to so the repair can see the repaired joint mates well.

DIY?
Try sourcing "tent pole repair sleeve' .. mont make one ...
Best to remove the shock cord down the centre of the poles (see above).
Mate the broken section with its companion. Using a hammer gently tap the broken bit back into agreement with its companion. You'll find you'll get close but the last bit will always spring back, Separate them and very gently tap it back ..

If you get a good fit then it will be a matter of strengthening the fracture. Basically add material around the outside e.g the repair sleeve, a thread wrapped around it , aluminum from a soft drink can (very thin - you can cut these with a sharp knife) .. and then use glue to hold it in place. This will always be weaker than a new pole.

Looks like this is a bit too small 8.6mm and it's usually OD and wall thickness measured

Thanks so much everyone. @Moondog55 @johnrs and @Warin

Thank you @Moondog55 for the offer of your pole if it fit - I don't believe it does, but appreciate your having thought of me.

I have only a tape measure here and it looks to me around 48 cm long x around 9 mm diam "ish". The external measurement of the pole could well be as you propose @Warin 9.3 mm. (It's hard measuring decimals of a mm, without the right piece of equipment to do it.)

I've just emailed to the recommended "Remote Repairs" to see if they are willing to do the pole repair.

Thanks everyone for the help!
