TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Mont Moondance 2 vs Wilderness Equipment Space 2

Postby NickB » Tue 17 Mar, 2020 5:57 pm

Hi All,

I am currently using a Nemo Equipment Losi 3p. Looking for something lighter yet not seeking compromise too much on strength and space.

Essentially started with considering Hillebergs however the Mont Moondance 2 looks to be a better option overall for Aust and NZ conditions.
Also considering the Wilderness Equipment Space 2.

Overall the Mont seems to have better materials and design

Thoughts - have any of you had a good or bad experience with Mont Moondance 2?

My 2p dome with mesh inner is a Big Sky Revolution at 1.55kg $640 delivered.

Just got a BD Eldorado. It's a stormproof 2p, but a cold 1k!

You must have some serious trips on the list for the BD Eldorado ??

No experience with the Moondance 2, but have a mate with a Moondance 1. He reckons it's excellent. On the other hand if he goes anywhere there is likely to be a big snow drop he takes a Nemo Kunai instead.

My own thoughts on seeing his on a few walks are that it looks pretty robust. The set-up seems more fiddly, but that might be him not the tent. I always felt the floor looked too thin for the Aussie bush but he doesn't use a footprint and he has had no problems. I haven't walked anywhere with him where we have experienced seriously adverse weather conditions, but it looks like it could handle whatever is thrown at it. Good luck with your decision making.

Hi Johnno,
Thanks for the re. I do like the Moondance 1 also however for a few hundred more grams I'd prefer the extra room and door. too. T
The floor to me seems solid for tents in this category. 40d with 10,000mm whereas the Wildnerness Equipment is 5,000mm for example and 40d.

Nothing wrong with those specs. It's obviously more robust than I suspected.

Yeah I've had a solid look and all that I can really find that's a better potential option is the Hilleberg and it's an inch lower and more suited to colder trips too.
Anyway, thanks and have a great weekend.

Nah. All Aussie, maybe some snow and some sand drift.
Decided to get a specific tent instead of a 4 season inner to swap around, or crossing fingers and making do.

Hi Nick
These are both very good tents, very similar but with some differences.
Can you see them together on a shop floor somewhere?
That will be the best way to decide
(They are often on display at Trek and Travel here in Sydney)

I recently had to get a new "lighter tent" and after looking at the usual lightweight tents like Big Agnes Copper Spur and also Moondance 2 and Nemos etc I decided to go with the Moondance1 simply because Aussie bush is that much tougher than most other parts of the world. 10000mm floor will handle heaps...there's a reason why old kathmandu and macpac tents are still going strong.
Anyway...as 188mm tall person I find the space snug but good.
Ale from Cycling About used Mont Moondance2 for 2 years give or take almost every day riding up from Ushuaia towards Alaska...and I think he just recently when he was somewhere in Mexico or Guatemala, got a new one. link below.

I have a Moondance 1 and a Moondance 2 (old version).

I am happy with both in SA, Vic and TAS walks (but have not encountered snow).

The 1 is roomy enough. The Moondance 2 is adequate but pretty intimate for two adults.

I think the new Moondance 2 comes in two versions. One lighter and one with less mesh on the inner (more suitable for wetter colder hikes).

The only drawbacks of the tents are 1. not intergral pitch so it is possible but difficult to pitch in rain without getting inner wet. 2. You can get lighter tents. 3. Probably not the best in heavy snow. 4. Vestible not the easiest to cook in if stuck in foul weather (compared to a tunnel tent)

But I am happy with them. I like the convenience of a freestanding tent, well made, light enough.

By the way I have the footprints for both. It protects the floor and is useful to pitch fly first.
