TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hydronaut fabric no longer waterproof

I have a Mont Austral rain coat that is no longer waterproof. I bought it ten years ago and it has had a moderate amount of use, maybe worn 30 or 40 times. The problem is the usual thing where the pack harness straps rub around the shoulders (causing the fabric to stretch and/or rub in sweat and dirt?). It is made of Hydronaut breathable fabric, the blurb label says to wash the garment and warm iron. I have done this a few times but I still get wet across the shoulders when I wear it in the rain which is undesirable to say the least, viz. a relatively heavy piece of kit no doing its job properly. So what to do? A mate has suggested spray-on reproofing stuff but someone else has told me such products should not be used on breathable fabrics like Goretex, Hydronaut etc. Ok, ok, ten years is a pretty good run, it works out at $29.90 per year, I could just bin it one make do with a bin liner.

Instructions on Mont site
https://www.mont.com.au/pages/hydronaute-care

  • Select a gentle machine wash or hand wash your garment in warm water using a specialist shellwear wash. Grangers, Storm & NikWax make appropriate products.
  • Drip dry in the shade, do not tumble dry.
  • Iron the outside of your dry garment on a gentle setting (low heat, no steam) with a towel or cloth between the garment and the iron. This will reinvigorate the DWR treatment on the exterior of the garment.
  • When the DWR treatment on the exterior of the garment can no longer be reinvigorated by ironing use a spray on DWR treatment. Grangers, Storm & NikWax make appropriate products.

When all else fails read the instructions. Thanks heaps Warin, that's a lot more info than on the clothing tag, I'll persevere and give it a go, maybe I can get another ten years out of it. I'll report back on how it works - it will have to be after it next rains - it could be a while!

Could always take a shower with it .. unless your water restrictions are biting.
They can only put so much on tags, and some cut them off anyway.
