Gore-tex jacket, zip away hood, pit-zips?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

A rain hood that attaches using an opening zipper to a rain jacket.

Should be easy enough to add pit zipps to a rain jacket that does not have them. 'Water proof zipps' are not really 'water proof' more 'water resistant'.

My meaning of a zip-away hood is one that zips into its collar. I rarely use a hood, and when I'm biking, skiing etc - I don't like the hood flapping away gathering water and snow.

I have no idea how I'd go about adding pit zips - there are precious few repair shops these days specialising in outdoor gear. Mucking up pit-zips would make the jacket uncomfortable I think

Find one? Rare beast i'd expect pit zips a feature more of high tech, roll hood of casual jackets?

If not- it would be much easier to add a tab to hold the rolled hood of a jacket with pit zips. I've done similar with a piece of light webbing and a simple/ single snap lock (one tiny hole that can be sealed before snapping)

It's actually a fairly common feature of ski jackets but in my limited experience ski jackets make bad bushwalking raincoats. That said if you don't mind the American UCP there are plenty of surplus L6 jackets on e-Bay, the US army L6 raincoat has all those features and the latest Gen 3 versions are reasonably light compared to the Gen1 issue; some are Gore Paklite even

I think you are right. Any chance of a photo of what you have done before? I like the idea but not 100% sure of what you mean by a snap lock and the tiny hole set up! Thanks

Those Jackets look like a bargain moondog.

I should have said 'Snap', rather than 'snap lock' (which would work as well if you wanted to sew a strap on).

The metal ones use a punch which may be the cheapest option: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/40pcs-Snap- ... 2749.l2649

So.. punch a snap (eg the male side) through, around the label somewhere/ inside below the collar and trap a strap of some sort with the snap. Put some sealant on the snap before closing it down Then put the alternate snap (eg. female side) on the end of the strap making the strap an appropriate length to hold the rolled up collar.

I've used 'similar' to pull a hood back further rather than a rolled up hood. I'll grab a pic if you are still (or more) confused?

Thanks Nuts, I think I understand. It's a good idea. But if you do have any photos I'd love to see them!
