TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Women and men of Australia-show me your undies! Please

Wed 18 Sep, 2019 5:10 pm

I've been using Uniqlo Airism MESH (90/10 poly-elastane) undies-the smaller ones turned inside out (to take advantage of the flatter seam) which have been really great and I have avoided chafing-but.....
as the inner seam gets worn it becomes raised and just lately on occasions youchhh.
I'm thinking --buy a couple of pairs more, then when worn out, wear them for everyday, but I thought I would look to what works for others especially like to here from the ladies as to what works for them-I have several ladies clothing items and they are often best for limiting sweat being lighter. The ladies Uniqlo Airism Mesh stuff is great for blokes too -I have several of their UV Cut Mesh Airism Hoodies. If they could get rid of the elastane they would be excellent.
I'm not looking for advice on limiting sweat or how to deal with chafing. Just want some items to browse. My adult daughters have given me some ideas but looking to explore all options. C'mon girls and boys show me your knickers.
If you have some items that work, might you please provide a link if you have time or the place you bought them.
Zapruda what's working for you?
Any runners, again both female and male do you have anything that works?
Thanks kindly
G
EDIT- THESE ARE WANTED FOR HARD EXERCISE sorry forgot to say

What a title. Wow. I was ready to raise the alarm.

I’m actually in a similar boat. I’m looking for something new. A few years ago I bought a bunch of Macpac merino boxers and they are finally coming to the end of their lives. They were ok but a little warm in summer. In normal life I’m a briefs guy and I don’t see why a pair of merino briefs wouldn’t work bushwalking.

In the dead of summer I just rely on the liner inside my running shorts but I don’t like this method for longer trips for obvious reasons.

Does anyone have any recs for merino briefs?

Icebreaker Atomica Boxers for walking but anything Merino would be good I think. Day-day, your Kmart/BigW/... cotton Boxers. I always get the mens :D

Ha ha I was hoping to get some people to post that might not have before.
I would imagine we have people of all descriptions on here and hoping to get the widest response possible. I need help.
Icebreaker undies comes up a lot S and I have five of their shirts for work brilliant stuff!
Was hoping someone could comment on their durability and anti chafe qualities.
Do macpac still make the merinos?-a few years use sounds good.
I love merino. Tried the Aldi ones which were well made and lightish but they were too small.
The liner on my Under Armour running shorts caused me a good chafing. Gave up after about 100ks.

Thanks Crolly. The icebreakers look good. Shame I can’t try them on beforehand...

Lamont, they do still make them. I bought 6 of them in a buy 2 get 1 free deal 6 years ago from memory. They all developed holes but saw about 40-50 nights each pair. No chafe!

I don’t wear merino for anything else anymore except the boxers. I’ve tried synthetic underwear and just can’t get used to it.

I’m keen to hear what everyone else has to say.

I am a big fan of Aerodaks. They are comfortable, wick sweat away well and dry quickly if they get wet.
I have used them for both long distance hiking trips and ultra running events and they have been great for both.
Made in Australia too !

Yes just checked ta.
Yep, merino only for work or non active only.
Trying them on, that's an issue all right. I think you can if you do it over your normal undies in the shop?
Checked the icebreakers too much elastane for my liking.
I like the shape of the Macpac women's ones a 'brief' style and very 'low boxery' things- and only 5% elastane. I hate boxers.
Anyone using these?

That Airism (I prefer the mesh stuff) is top stuff.
I bought six of the mesh and same of the standard airism on special-excellent.

Good point about merino is they dont smell and are better for hygiene on longer walks.

Bad point is they take longer to dry so you cant wash them on longer walks if the weather is cold and damp as they wont dry.

I use boxers and think any brand of merino works for that. Ice breaker seem to last a bit longer than Macpac or the other outdoor chain retailer versions

Im currently using merino but considering switching to synthetic for summer as cooler and faster drying.

ExOfficio, comfortable, don't get too smelly and very quick drying.

Definitely a +1 for the Uniqlo Airism. They are now my standard undies, I have both the mesh and non-mesh versions and have been slowly adding to the collection over the past 3 or 4 years. I used to use Ex Officio but compared to the Uniqlo find them much rougher and have had issues with the elastic breaking down, not to mention the the Airism are half the price of Ex Officio.

I use T8 Commandos undies for both bushwalking and ultras. They're amazing in the heat. Founder is an Aussie based in Hong Kong. https://t8.run/

ExOfficio here too, briefs. Expensive but highly recommend. Not too smelly long term and dry quickly.

Mis-read the elastane amount. What a dill. It's only 5% which I reckon is very tolerable and some nylon for durability.
Is the hem around the legs holes nice and flat/smooth Zapruda?

Just remember to wear your shorts over the top- those undies look good.

Very flat. I don’t think the hem or waist band will be an issue.

I’ll do my best. Maybe I can go faster if I leave the shorts behind. Less wind resistance / drag?

For years now much of my overnight walking is done in the warmer months. And my swimming / love of water background means I wear and take Funky Trunks (briefs style). Any other time (today!), it is the Funky Trunks undies (in fire engine red or chilli red, as it matches the car...):  https://www.funkytrunks.com/181-underwear

I had exofficio for a few years, but I found that mediums were to baggy and smalls were to tight in the waistband. Also the price was always too much to swallow considering that I could only get a couple years at most from a pair before the elastic blew. I've gone to the Airisms, regular and mesh for all uses and find them pretty durable (got one pair from three years ago that is just starting to show wear in the elastic). As much as I want to limit my synthetics usage, its just not possible as most cotton shorts don't get along with me when its super hot, and the only brand I like isn't worth shipping from overseas.

For info, I'm normally a 32inch (82cm) and find that even clothes that are sized to fit are either very baggy or very tight, might have something with having basically no hips to speak of, when it comes to male body types, rail comes to mind.

I wear the Airism Boxers and recently have bought merino boxers from aldi. I find the aldi ones great but after a few days i find they seem to ride up a little.
Loving the lack of smell though. The airism ones were great for odor but after a while they seem to lose the anti odour stuff imbedded in the fabric and smell of sweat.
This past weekend I stopped in at the dfo in Canberra and picked up a macpac merino boxer (rather reasonable price atm). Much better cut than the aldi ones but haven't had time to test them out seriously. Although I have a feeling that they will be the go too from now on.

+1 for Macpac merino undies.

Probably too much info, but this winter I experimented with going commando for x-country skiing because i hate the long drying time of sweaty merino. worked a treat with furry softshell pants.

Have two pairs of merino boxers, they are very nice but would have to search back to find the brand name!
Might collect some more, still testing.

Otherwise my default for a while has been the Kmart coolmax everyday with a longer leg.

Just upgraded my UL puffy (3rd) from uniqlo, this one has a hood for $80 on spesh. And a couple of Airism mesh crew neck t-shirts. They are great an will be my next tops evolution; )

Ta, especially to those that offerred links and usage/comfort comments. Just a wee reminder, I know airism mesh low boxery things are good I have many pairs, looking for recs other than them. The seam in the crutch in nearly all mine buckled over time and they became raised when damp and working hard it rubs in the the groin. Still perfect for non active use. Worn thru Cambodian heat. Wanted to like the sewn in mesh undies in my shorts for fast packing but wouldn't work. Hated cutting them out. I am envious yours work Zapruda.

My NIKE Dri-Flow running shorts are OK, but that assumes you do not wear anything else in them. I do not run but I do sweat a lot when it gets hot and they allow a lot of airflow. These are the version with the pointelle mesh inserts
