I am a fan of DIY camping equipment. Both using it in the field, or just making it for fun, especially easy to make ones that don't need any specialised equipment.

The attached image is of my homemade windshield, created from an aluminium baking tray ($2). I have used this when camping and it works brilliantly. It is double layer, so I can open it up to be taller to go with a taller gas canister and stove when needed.

Below it is my tuna can stove, which works great at home. I haven't got around to using it in the field...yet.

Not included my DIY failures.

My next project is to make a hexamine tablet stove setup where you can control the flame intensity.

Love to hear about other people's DIY suggestions.

I recently did the Larapinta using just my "tuna can stove" for all my cooking.
I also have a home-made windshield made from a baking tray.

In both cases these were free - can't get better than that!

ChrisJHC, thankyou for the great idea of using an aluminuim disposable baking tray for a wind deflector, have been racking my brains, for something like this for a fair while, did not want to buy, some of the other offerings as they are weighty. Thanks again

When I saw the photo at first I thought, wow, this guy made his own pot!

I make a windscreen using aluminium foil. I usually use 4 layers with the edges folded to provide some stiffness. I size it to fit in the pot when folded. That gives sufficient height to be above the top of the pot when using a 100g gas canister and nearly to the top with 230g canisters. The last time I weighed one it came in at 18g.

I've tried your solution and it produces a stiffer windscreen. I usually add support (a couple of small rocks or my shoes/boots) to the foil ones. But I found that the baking tray windscreens fail at the folds after a while. That happens with the foil versions too but foil is cheap and it only takes minutes to make a new one.
