BD Icon and only 5 years old too.
But not a warranty issue, it seems that the Lithium batteries self discharged or shorted out or something as the battery pack was full of grey powder and two of the batteries look overheated. Not much I can do about it but I have sent an email to Eveready with a complaint
I've always liked the Icon even if there are brighter lamps it seemed to me to offer a reasonable compromise between battery life and the power to see the tracks in the snow after dark
Now I am debating whether to get another Icon while the sale is on or try something else
I have had the torch 5 years so I've had a reasonable run, but it is annoying

I liked my BD as well until the wife's new puppy took a liking to it.

Happy to recommend a Nitecore NU20.
Light weight, bright enough to walk tracks at night and the other settings are good around camp.
Charges from a USB and walked 7 days recently without needing to charge.

160 lumens ? Is that enough for night skiing/routefinding in bad weather?

Nope rechargable might be a problem if I can't carry extra battery packs and I don't see that option
OK I will consider buying a big USB bank if the option is viable

I used fhe NU20 this morning walking fairly sharpish at 4.30 into the light. I like it. Alternated from the low setting with the moonlight and stars to the mid when it got a bit rocky underfoot. The mid setting is very bright has a nice beam and field/circle corona of light. Full charge in two hours from dead flat and can be used whilst recharging if that suits. Would have bought the NU25 if it was sold then, but it came out after the 20. Don't have snow use experience though.

I may just buy the new version from Snowys on afterpay to save $50- during the sale

Night skiing on a full moon. How good is that?

The Nitecore is a good alround head lamp. I was a bit worried about the USB option but the light is good for a number of days and I carry a charger on longer walks. It's turned out to be nice fit for me

If I had another $60- I'd be tempted
I love nite skiing under a full moon, it doesn't happen often enough but when it does the majic lasts for decades

I just received an email from Energizer/Eveready asking for complete details.
Photos of the batteries and quotes to replace the BD icon.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused with our Energizer batteries and we are glad you brought this to our attention, as you might have got the bad batch of the batteries.

Nice to see a big company admitting some fault but I'm not sure how to proceed exactly as I cleaned up the battery compartment trying to get it to work again, also I thiunk it caused the problem in the LED drivers circuits somehow and that set of boards used micro SMD and is sealed
Anyhow I'll take the photos and send them back and I'll see what happens

I was going to suggest an Ay Up light and then saw the budget, they are still very nice lights if someone has the budget.

I have a little Energizer which was better than expected and a LED Lenser, both turn on your pack and run flat so they are effectively useless.
The Black Diamond MD linked is very tempting, would be handy for work.

The storm is what I recommend to people. Solid, reliable, and not too heavy. Its a great winter lamp.

Yes it is a great headlamp but seeing as how the Icon was on sale and the new Icon also has the Arctic pocket as part of the package I thought it suited my needs better

Eveready just came back with an offer of a sum of money to replace the batteries and the headlamp. The sum offered is acceptable

Ceciles NOS Icon just arrived
Dead batteries as expected but for less than $50- we think it was a bargain; seller must have had a few sitting for ages to sell so cheaply

Yes It seems that they take their corporate responsibility seriously.
I was hopeful of a reasonable outcome but they have exceeded my expectations. Basically new for old replacement

I've just started using a Biolite headlamp 330 and I'm very impressed. IpX4, 330Lumens, and it's only 69g.
I get several nights of 3/5hrs use each night from a single charge, varying the output and beam type. It's got fully variable (press to fade) brightness on each setting, something I didn't realize how much I'd use.
Highly recommend looking into it.
