Zpacks Duplex. Dyneema Composite Fibre, aka Cuben fibre, single wall, 590 grams.
Half porch doors open on both sides, head end.
Fell asleep looking at the stars and a sickle moon from bed.
No typo, just a wee dash.
13 degrees inside, 10.1 outside at 5am.
Coffee at 5.30am
Walking in the dark at 6 am.

Friday night in the Duplex 5.2C (-outside 4.1C) at 5.30am--"dry" camp.
Saturday night in the Duplex 5.6C (-outside 3.5C) at 5 am ---a metre above (and 8 metres away) from a watery pondy rivery streamy spot.
Dry as bone both nights under the DCF.

So until your next walking trip, just slip a thin piece of paper or plastic inbetween the contacts & watch type battery...otherwise your forever replacing batteries.

The one Zapruda linked and I bought has been on since I bought it one year ago-same batteries.

If it is the cheaper one with AA batteries I expect it will be heavier.

Your phone will be just as good if not more accurate than a clip-on or carry-along thermometer. Also, some phones also have temperature reading built in as just one part of a suite of functions such as gyrometer, level, magnetism, etc. I think there are apps that can be downloaded that make use of these functions, I certainly have on my Galaxy S9.

Other than that, Jaycar stocks a slender indoor/outdoor thermometer with a somewhat long sender cord that attaches wherever you want; designed for fridges, the main unit is attached by double-sided adhesive on the outside and the sender is routed into the fridge. Two hearing-aid style batteries power it.

I don’t think there are many (any?) phones that have ambient thermometers. They do have internal temperature sensors to prevent overheating but that won’t help here.

Plus I’m not sure it meets the definition of “cheap” in the title. Although, assuming you already have one it’s free and therefore cheap by definition.

Nope, Chris is right-all using data and BOM stations. Apps too. The phone is useless

You do realise I bought one a year ago and am very happy with it?

A bit late to the party, sorry! I have an Inkbird Mini temperature logger and found it to work pretty well. Costs about $40 on eBay. Weighs in at just 10g. Unfortunately, there's no screen so if you want to use it as a thermometer you'll need a phone. For logging, it seems to work really well.

The screenshot is from Carnarvon last June. I had the thing on the outside of my pack so the temperature spikes recorded are from being in direct sunlight. Nighttime temperatures seem reasonably accurate. I've only used it for that one week so can't comment on long-term durability, but so far so good!

If you have a Garmin GPS, get the ANT+ Tempe temperature sender that clips on to anything you can think of and continuously records the temperature.
Any number of Tempe sensors can be connected, and they are switchable through the GPS.

I have an old Garmin GPS .. it does not support external sensors.

The Tempe cost is ~$32. It stores the last 24 hours.

The Inkbird looks to be better - stores more, has humidity...

The Inkbird is probably better with iPhone users, as these do not have the physical ability for ANT+ transmission (surprisingly!!) that can make use of many other devices, not the least of temperature senders.
I would not leave any phone on continuous Bluetooth connection, certainly not on extended walks.
