Mountain Designs Closing Down

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

When a business goes down, it’s invariably multifactorial and hardly in one day. Guess we are seeing it. Looking back is always so much clearer.
Just move it!

For heaven’s sake we don’t have serious mountains here
True, but not true. Just altitude by itself - true.

Few Americans even know what a tunnel tent IS. They only go walking in the 'Sierra Summer Season' when an absence of rain is almost a certainty. We (around Kosci or SW Tas), and NZ, have some of the more extreme weather in the world.

In Europe they sleep in large catered huts (Refuges). All very nice, but if you produce a tent they go 'ooh' and 'ahh'. Produce a stove and start cooking - more ooh and ahh.

So don't sell us short.

Cheers

Yep. Our mountains may not have that much altitude, but they more than make up for it with attitude.

Where I am in Geelong, the MD store was in constant discount cycles from 20% to 60% in a vain attempt to bring people through the door. To say nothing of the guy running the show in there who was not faintly interested in customers until they reached for their wallet! There has never been a time when the Geelong store windows was not plastered with discount signs! The stock inside was poor: narrow, colours and styles that do not appeal to the masses, much less odd fitting and a long-term perception among browsers of being pricey and out of sync with the outdoor market. A lot of distractive must-have 'trinkets' didn't help. Have a look at Rays and Anaconda: regular whole-floor stock turn-overs to keep it fresh and up to date has been a key success for both stores.

MD attempted to put itself above others by trumpeting its home-brand — Mountain Designs-branded shellwear especially. Poorly designed, oddly sized and very, very expensive for what it is. I was astounded to be asked $690 for a shell jacket when it felt like rice paper to me. Really, nothing in MD was unique that could not be found the same or similar elsewhere (e.g. in Little Bourke Street), and sometimes cheaper at that.

I am not a one-time visitor to the Outdoor Strip of Little Bourke Street. I was around when Paddy Pallin was a tiny store (and doing very, very well) in the 1980s. Many others have come and gone, and MD is but a conspicuous casualty of shifting retail dynamics, mores and values which also affect the likes of David Jones and Myer, among others.

I think the outdoor market here in Australia is too small to support so many players, and proferring a perception that expensive clothing is required to go for a day walk in the Otways! I predict there will be more casualties, especially looking at MacPac, which trades well in New Zealand, but not as well here. Still, its range is narrow and designs dated.

all great points..
I would imagine (and hope) Kathmandu would suffer first before Macpac.. not that I am wishing that on any of them. Macpac at least have history and reputation for quality. Whether they are resting on that reputation is debatable, but Kathmandu follow the same "order out of a Chinese catalogue, price it high and then discount" policy. At least Macpac appear to have a design team and sponsored "athletes" and brand ambassadors who provide feedback.

Their Prothermals are a good example of this, being updated after feedback from their sponsored members..

There is Kathmandu here in Geelong too, but it is a tiny store and never bustling. Lots of cheap Chinese-made stuff and again, odd, strange colours. It, like MD, looks out of place and doesn't seem to serve any particular market segment other than browsers who may pick up a keyring LED lamp (at ridiculous cost). Having said that, the staff are friendly and helpful, just that the store does not have what people are looking for. So...they go to Anaconda or Rays and ... bingo!

My nieces shop at Kat, but not me. MacPac... that's a very different story. I spent up big at the MacPac store in Queenstown — couldn't help myself: down jackets, hydration pack, shoes, fleece jumper...water bottle, socks... I'd have to ask my companion niece what else it was that caused us to be charged excessive baggage with Qantas!!

Smith Street Fitzroy store of MacPac is a bit more interesting than the Lt Bourke Street store. Besides, Hipsterville is always interesting for a bit of a squiz and a squash.

I know that at least around my area, the opposite is true... Heaps of people 'bargain hunting' and buying from Kathmandu, and hardly anyone at Rays.

You see Kathmandu jackets everywhere in Geelong. You see them on the hike to the supermarket. You see them at the Auskick basecamp. Kathmandu is successful in a totally different way to Mountain Designs.

Yes. My Specialist doctor often turns up in an Kathmandu aquamarine puffer vest — just something she picked up as a 'first stop/as needed' basis a while back. She it not into the outdoors, other than golf on the weekends. Other insights into her include a pricey Garmin watch [in purple...] in which she keeps her golf scores (!)

Kathmandu is an ASX-listed company [KMD] with a very interesting back story relating to that, unlike MD which appears to have lurched erratically from one red line to the next before succumbing. But KMD is still subject to the fickle vagueries of constantly changing retail dynamics.

Brand is now up for sale if anyone's interested...

http://www.couriermail.com.au/business/ ... 4d8c0d91c4

STRUGGLING outdoor gear seller Mountain Designs has shut all stores, making it the latest retailer to try trading via online sales alone.
The Brisbane-based business also went on the auction block on Friday, with the brand and the intellectual property of the 43-year-old Mountain Designs offered in an “urgent sale”.
“It is in the wishes of the current owners for the business to continue,” a Mountain Designs spokesman told The Courier-Mail.
Just at the start of the year, Mountain Designs had 39 stores selling items from beanies to walking sticks. But in four rapid culls, shops were shut down, with the final 12 shuttered earlier this month, meaning all-told more than 150 jobs have been lost.
“There was a number of actions to position the company for sale,” the spokesman said. BDO is handling the sale.
Now only its online sales site is trading, and offering discounts of between 60 per cent and 80 per cent.

The item is behind a paywall, therefore (ta-da!) you need to be a Subcriber and pay the Courier Mail some pretty pennies just to read a bit of recycled guff...
But the OP did type the text out ad verbatim so there probably is no need to see the article.

Not the way it works for a company in liquidation.

It's clearly pretty tough all round though, Rays in Geelong shut one of its two stores. Anaconda Geelong dramatically cut its floor space when Clark Rubber moved in. Ditto BCF North Geelong, not that they have much to do with walking, when they halved or more their floorspace. Kathmandu had its troubles a couple of years ago.

Businesses closing is not restricted to outdoor equipment retailers. Bicycle shops, car repair businesses, service stations, sail-makers, boat repairers...computer repairers... open/cessation business occurs across a very broad and diverse spectrum, every day of the year. The MD saga hints to problems that were going on very long-term regarding debt levels and the inability service these by increasing sales, despite aggressive discounting (and discount fatigue was one of the reasons given for exhausting their options).

Kathmandu does not carry high debt levels from what I can see. But it still feels the pressure of contracting retail dynamics here and in New Zealand.

Ray's had a store in Ryrie Street that closed a few years ago — it was a bit out-of-the-way and hard to find. A year or two back at the end of lease, Rays transferred business from North Geelong (not the best position for it) to Waurn Ponds. The Waurn Ponds store is now the Victorian flagship outlet.

Anaconda was stuck with the gigantic floor space from the start and was always seeking to trim that space. The one problem that store has now is insufficient car parking at specific times e.g a sale happening at both Spotlight and Anaconda causes chaos.

When you remember that Rays and BCF are all part of the Supercheap Auto conglomeration many things can be explained.

Well, we are way off topic now, but that is a very generous description of Rays north geelong closing which was part of a major restructure of the business including multiple store closures and remodeling the stores in the old format, which were performing badly, to the new 'adventure' format. I must say, last time I was in there I was surpised how much hiking gear they had in terms of filtration, hiking tents, lightweight mats etc things I didn't expect to see.

agreed.. I really like the new range of gear Rays are carrying.. MSR & Marmot tents, Sawyer filters, Patagucci clothing, Jack Wolfskin etc etc.. As long as they stick to their guns and don't turn into a BCF style "homebrand" store again, I'd hope they would do well..

Following on from the post about Rays, this just came through :
http://www.news.com.au/finance/business ... 299c09be88

Super Retail Group will buy New Zealand outdoor brand Macpac for $A135 million.

The ASX-listed retailer says it will call on existing debt facilities to acquire 54 Macpac stores across Australia and NZ, and consolidate its Rays outlets under the Macpac brand.

Looking at the students I work with, those who's folks have money have Katmandu gear, those who's parents don't have a lot of black wolf and denalli (anaconda) and those who's parents know what's what have a mish mash of hand-me downs, or "just good enough for this trip" style gear, likely not expecting it to be looked after. We rarely saw MD branded gear. So they weren't a hit with the fashion-sports crowd like Katmandu. So far what rays has for listings don't fill me with much confidence, looks like more of the brand-flipping that they were doing before. It would be nice to have a mid-range REI sort of no-frills type shop, but the midrange here is so blown out with junk brands that it would be hard to rise above in the average consumer's mind. Perhaps the idea of a single brand store is on its way out?
