Site maintenance

Postby wildwalks » Sat 07 Sep, 2013 10:23 pm

Hi All

On Sat 7th (tonight) I completed a significant migration of this site from a USA based server to an Australian based service. This was to solve some major server outages we where having -- but also to improve the speed and general reliability of the website.
I have conducted a bunch of testing but there is always a good change I have missed something or stuffed something up.
If you notice anything missing, changed or just broken please post it here. I will try to resolve it as soon as possible.

Thanks

Matt :)

i've been thrashing the site this morning, it's absolutely apalling, ..
appallingly fast and reliable...

I thought I would point out that there is one thing that looks "weird"...

hehe -- thanks guys
yeah weird header :)
-- I was expecting a good speed increase - but this has shocked me - it is nice and fast now :)
-- Server is now based in Australia -- so the latency is much lower. Humming along nicely so far.

Hi SAH

Thanks -- yes sorry that was a change I made -- I noticed a mistake in the code during the migration - the ads were supposed to have been up for several months now. My bad I forgot to tell people.
The ads should only appear if you are not logged in -- there should be no ads on the mobile version if log in.
I use the money from the advertising to help offset the cost of running the website and paying for the upgrades and little projects along the way.
I do my best to keep the ads to a minimum for members and hence why there should be no ads on the mobile version if you are logged in.

Tapatalk is about to release ads on their system - it appears we will have no control over them. I know some people really like it and I will continue to maintain it but I personally prefer the mobile skin.

thanks for the feedback -- happy to talk about this more if it is is an issue.

Matt :)

Yeah there does seem to be an issue with email. They are been sent but the issue seems to be with reverse the reverse DNS lookup with the chance in servers seems to be causing them to go be seen as spam (and killed before most spam filters even get it). I will work on it. We had a similar issue when we moved the servers about 1.5 years ago now -- but thought I had covered it off.
Thanks.

An issue with the photo comp upload was reported to me via PM -- I think it is fixed now but let me know if you have any issues there.
some emails are getting through -- hopefully more over the next few days as the DNS updates propagate.

thanks

Thanks for the kind words and letting me know.
I would think about half the people will be getting emails now -- hope the rest will be getting them by the end of the week.
They are all been sent but upstream servers see them as black listed spam so they are not getting passed on.

Thanks again

Matt :)

Fantastically quick now - thanks! Had been blaming my ISP for woeful performance
One problem though - got a notification email and followed link to
http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=11905&p=196034#p196034
but only queries where the photos should be.

Those photos all seem to be hosted on new.bushwalk.com , are all images from there down?

Well that is weird -- have not idea why they are pointing to that "new" domain. Weird new.bushwalk.com and bushwalk.com resolve to the same place anyway (I will still try to fix that though to save extra DNS round trips)

Chris -- I am a little confused where/are the photo comp images not visible to you on that page??

thanks

Matt :)

They all look like this: http://puu.sh/4oiQt.png
This is the related source code: http://puu.sh/4oiVQ.png
This is the image link: http://new.bushwalk.com/photocomp/image ... 931112.png
If you remove the 'new' it loads: http://bushwalk.com/photocomp/images/20 ... 931112.png
DNS lookups for new.bushwalk.com fails on my computer and online.

It could just be that the changes have not fully propagated.
I hope that helped. :/

Matt, I have had a lot of trouble uploading some photos today. After uploading a second image my original text and first photo upload disappeared with a message that the first image I had uploaded was unavailable. It took four goes to finally get the text and one photo posted, so I decided to add the additional images as separate posts, which worked. Have there been any changes to the number of attachments and their size, that can be uploaded per post?

Hi Tas-man
Thanks for reporting the issue. It sounds frustrating.
I have increased the size of image as part of the migration. I can't reproduce the issue my side.
maybe you could email me the photo and I can try doing some test posts with it. If I can reproduce the problem then I can try to find a way to fix it.

thanks
