Is this a community?

Tue 13 Aug, 2013 11:10 am

Yeah, online polls... what's the point. I'm still curious, anyhow. :-)

Please avoid repeating all the stuff in the other topic. Let's keep that there if possible. This is really just for the poll.

i'm not interestedin colinm's technical definition of a community,
this is an online community as far as i'im concerned even with the moderation that is in effect. i'm not interested in a deteailed technical analysis of exactly what does and doesnt constitute a community, it pretty much "feels" like a community on the whole
the moderation could be debated at times but on the whole the moderation does work , you cant please all the people all the time...

I agree wayno, this is the first place I come to each morning. We have even had community get togethers in the past ie anniversary walks.
I have been a member since 07 and have learnt alot , from new places to new gear( didnt know Hilleberg existed until I came on here) - maybe thats a bad thing.
I have walked on one anniversary walk and also had one walk with a member from this forum.
I have never run foul of moderation, try to stay away from the controversial subjects.
I am here for trip, reports, gear, photos and to read and interact with other bushwalkers about bushwalking - not religion, politics or conservation.

never run foul of moderation? mate you should get a medal... 8)
i'd never heard of Hilleberg or montane till i came to this site... people volunteer their time to run the time to help others for nothing, i received help for my first trip to tasmania, it was my first walking trip to aus.

I am a relatively new member here and in comparison to all the Internet "communities" I've been on since Usenet, mailing lists to modern forums, I'd say this forum is no more or less than any of the other communities, one that's focused on bushwalking and related activities. Isn't that how definition of word are recorded and adjusted over time, by real world use of the term? So yes, this is a community in the year 2013.

Should come over more often and we'll have a Trans-Tasman community.

Depends, what do you mean by "this?"

It's becoming less and less of a community. When I joined the membership was relatively small, had a high percent of Tasmanian members and this gave it a great community feel. Don't get me wrong I certainly don't have a problem with folks from the mainland on this site, it is just my opinion that as the site has grown the community feel has lessened.

I understand your feelings but could it be that the village community has grown to a more city sized community? And in that growth has developed lots of sub groups with different areas of interest, while still maintaining the broader general interest of the community as a whole? Nothing wrong with the village community, but it does miss out on the absorption of a wide range of interests from other facets of the broader community. Take the Photo comps - the Tassie comp hasn't been diminished by the existance of the Other States, nor has the Tas comp lost because of the Tas Non-landscape comp. each complements the other but has a slightly different focus. You can acknowledge the others existance but not participate, without diminishing your own involvement.

I am now resident in Tas but not Tasmainian. I doubt I will reside here for too many more years (unfortunately) but I can take my interest with me and move from subgroup to subgroup within the community, represented on this forum, as location and circumstances change.

And this isn't a comment on doogs, but only on the feeling he has expressed. I believe many will agree with him. I am now resident in Tas but not Tasmainian. I doubt I will reside here for too many more years (unfortunately) but I can take my interest with me and move from subgroup to subgroup within the community, represented on this forum, as location and circumstances change.

Vague waffle over now.
