International sub-forum, NZ sub-forum

Postby GPSGuided » Tue 30 Jul, 2013 1:08 pm

Just occurred to me, given how closely associated we are with NZ and the number of NZ participants here, would it be worthwhile to have a NZ sub-forum, to separate it out with the rest of the world in "International"? Just a thought.

It was mentioned a couple of months back, but no follow up. Obviously it would be a good idea as most posts in the international section are about NZ. But I guess if you do sub-sections, you could do NZ, Europe, America, Asia and Others.

With the small volume from other regions, the existing "International" category would be adequate. I thought about this NZ issue when I was searching for past posts on Mt Taranaki, when I noticed the large number of NZ related threads. Oh well...

Been raised a few times in the past. Hopefully with Matt now at the helm we might see the change this time.

Thanks Guys
Yep - I think a NZ forum makes sense.

there are two ways I see it working
1) add NZ as a local track forum
2) add NZ as a subforum of international

Looking through the international posts there seems like more then enough threads to make a NZ (sub)forum via
Maybe even a USA.

I am leaning towards a subforum of international - seems to make more logical sense.

Just out of interest to create the forum is very easy. but to make it work it will mean shifting the NZ threads into the new subforum - this takes time. And you obviously need enough content to make it feel like a real forum - which I think we have.

Matt :)

Just putting the new forum in place is a good start. No hurry to move the older threads - that can still be found via a search :)

Given the banner of this bushwalk.com forum being "Bushwalk Australia", I also think it's logical to keep the NZ sub-forum under International. Have not looked for US related threads so can't really comment on the need for a US sub-forum. But these two are probably the more major destinations for us. Come to think of it, haven't read many threads on walks in East Asia. Would have thought there'd be more given our proximity and being one of the major holiday destinations. Talking to a friend recently, Malaysia seemed to have some very interesting tropical walks.

Hmmmmm...

A NZ subforum in the international section is something I would appreciate/see a legitimate use for.

Thanks all for chatting about this idea.

I have just created a "New Zealand" sub forum under international.
Will probably need to think about trip reports & tracknotes sub-sub forum as well :)

Enjoy - will try to copy NZ stuff across but not tonight :)

thanks again

Matt :)

Awesome thanks Matt!

Should we report threads to move or trust they will be picked up?

If people care to report topics they feel would be better suited in the NZ forum, that will make our job easier, so, yes thank you.

Oh and the new NZ sub-forum seems to be one of the few without a description (if that makes sense?).

Ok, they should all land in last-post order anyway, probably need to avoid/remove any last posts that are just notifications (ideally) but should be good enough either way. Standby..

I think most are moved over now, a couple of us have had a go at it- still a few that were pointed out this morning. If anyone sees any more (nz topics in international forum...or anything doubled up  ) just report them (using the report button)

Recently I moved a heap of topics that had been reported, into the NZ forum.

My thanks to the member/s who reported them, your time in doing so saved a lot of my time, and also assisted in improving the forum.

A useful one at that! I love NZ and will keep much more of an eye on the subforum rather than the international section in general.

It would liken it to me being interested in walks down here in Tassie but having to follow a section that talks generally about walks all around Australia just to be able to follow such topics. A great addition in my opinion.

I thought that the NZ sub-sub-forum is but a grouping for convenience. Whilst all the NZ related thread are visible in that sub-forum, they are still displayed in the International sub-forum, mixed amongst all the other threads. So it's just a feature with no loss of existing presentation.

Yes, I too love NZ's outdoors.

Not sure about this. I think all the topics you are still seeing [note the transparent topic icon indicating a thread has been moved] in the international section is the result of moving a topic from the International section to the new NZ section. New threads created in the NZ section do not seem to appear in the International section (as is to be expected in my mind).

And again, another 60 odd topics just moved from the International forum to the New Zealand forum.
Much time has been spent by Robert H flagging these topics to be moved, which is greatly appreciated.
