Site goes down for hours

Postby colinm » Wed 24 Jul, 2013 7:54 am

At least subjectively ... I can't see it for many hours at a time, browser reports 'no response.'

Just FYI.

Ditto. It is intermittent and I notice it most in the evenings but have also had problems on the odd occasion I access the site in the mornings.

I get "problem loading page" (using Firefox)
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

Try this, pull the plug out of your modem, wait at least 30 seconds before plugging the power cord back in.

Than clear out your cache.

If it don't rectify your problem, it should at least improve your internet speed.

Also have seen this issue for a while now. Intermittent and of duration in the hours. Problem for both browser and Tapatalk access. So don't believe it's a simple browser cache issue.

This is happening with other forums, I'm having the same issues on hammock forum.

Clear the cache from your web browser. Go into the tools menu of your browser, it all depends which browser your using. Make sure to select Everything in the time range setting.

This may fix some problems with some forum problems Phil, but each time this site has stopped responding, I get no IP connection at all. No TCP/IP Ping.
It's not a browser problem, it's a connectivity problem IMO.

Same here, been quite regularly down over the last few weeks. I was starting to think it was the admin pulling the plug to allow the heated discussions to cool off or something :)

Used this every time i couldnt get on http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and the answer was down for everyone.

Don't go wasting your time clearing your cache or rebooting your modem.
If you can get google and do a search for anything random, your internet is working so you should be able to get to this forum.

The problem is that there have been some server issues, and a lot of hours have been spent behind the scenes trying to iron out the bug / problem. Things are looking a lot better, so now we are in a "wait and see" holding pattern.
A greater change resulting in an even more reliable service than what has been offered to date is planned, the timing of its implementation is dependent on external timing factors.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we're really working hard to keep it up and running and also to resolve issues when they are noticed as quickly as possible (including SMS's beyond midnight  ).

Unplugging your modem and clearing cache is still a good thing to do as a maintenance schedule for your pc.

Hi all
Sorry for the hassle. I know this is a huge pain.
A few weeks ago the server had a catastrophic hardware failure. We where down for about 4 hours to recover.
Since then we have had a series of some short and some long outages.
Most of the recent issues seem due to some software changes with the new server.
I have spent many hours reading through error logs and working on the issue.
There seems to be several smaller problems that build up to cause these crashes.
I would love to say that it is fixed now - but I thought I had fixed it last week :)
Until this most recent series of issues the server had an excellent uptime over the last 12months. Hope to get back to reliable service soon.

Sorry again, I hope to have this all fixed soon. The server CPU, memory and disk write stats are looking good again. So fingers crossed we have actually fixed it this time.

Matt :)

Hey Matt,

No worries, I know how hard it is to keep a service up and running. That's why I run mine on a vm in the USA these days :)

Out of curiosity, I assume Linux (because it once had excellent uptime.) Correct? But RedHat or derivative? (Hoping for, "hell^no! Debian!")

Matt :)

Thanks Matt and Adam.
It's been the great tonight to have normal access - have been struggling regularly recently. Have just learned that Telstra has acknowledged we have a local problem (and will fix it!), but often could not get into this forum even when I could access others, albeit slowly.
Your long hours of extra work is much appreciated.

I've noticed it happening a fair bit lately and found this website which quickly tells you if it is just you or whether everybody experiencing the problem. Doesn't help when I'm trying to log on here for some solid procrastination from work/study but it's reassuring to find out it's not just me!

It's working fine now. I had the same problems on a hammock forum.

That is interesting about the other forums
Part of the problem we have been having is some "denial of service" attacks but they are pretty weak attacks so normally they would not cause an issue. I wonder if they are targeting a few related forums. Usually these things are not personal but just automated.
well it has been 24hrs since the last crash and things are looking nice - fingers and toes crossed.

Working fine today. In regards to the hammock forum, myself and many others had to supply our IP address to the site owner, he than done something at his end to allow us to view the forum.

Thanks Phil -- Sounds like they have had a DNS attack as well -- and is whitelisting IPs. Can be a solution. But this forum get fair bit traffic around 2500 people each day and many are not registered so it would be a shame to block them out. I think we will solve this soon enough.
Thanks
