Hollywood movie about Tasmanian Tiger to be shot in Tas

Postby matthias » Fri 23 Jul, 2010 11:05 pm

So apparently they will shoot some movie with Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill in Hobart later this year.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/07/23/2962857.htm

Plot:
Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe will play the lead: a mercenary sent to find the last Tasmanian tiger.

Looking at the plot and the low budget of $6.7m I'm guessing it will be trash from the sort of Anaconda, King Kong or Rambo.

I'm posting this here because I think it will be interesting to see whether they get any special grants from the gov to shoot in wilderness areas and if yes, what impact this will have. If they need wilderness scenes I can't imagine a whole film crew won't have any impact.

Interesting. They would be able to get the scenes needed from the side of the Lyell highway i'd have thought? Cant imagine it will impact on the sensitive areas too much?? :?

hmm willem dafoe, the detective in boondock saints and green goblin come to mind. I really don't know what to think..
maybe the tasmanian tiger could be the ghastly hybrid between a bunyip and a tassie devil, and the final action scene could be set on top of federation peak with police helicopters finally surrounding the damned creature.

Please, please, please tell me the final shot will be of Hobart destroyed by napam as the lead actor flys away in the search and resuce helicopter armed with gatling guns saying " some one had to do it" Still Hobart would look nicer returned back to pre settlement

Now ducks for cover from low flying brickbats

Actually live in two. The beach resort of Devonport and bushwalking central Launceston :D Both have the lovely feature of not been filled with bureacrats and their love of signs generally saying no

The movie is based on the book 'The Hunter' from Julia Leigh, this is what Amazon says about the book:

Already a hit in Australia, Leigh's flawed but exciting debut describes the deadly search for the fabled, and perhaps extinct, Tasmanian tiger, aka the thylacine. A mysterious man who is identified to the reader only as M assumes the identity of "Martin David, naturalist" and arrives at the filthy, disheveled house of depressed Lucy Armstrong, whose husband, Jarrah, a naturalist and bioethics expert, recently disappeared on the plateau. Lucy's home becomes the base for M's treks into the wilderness, ostensibly to study the habits of Tasmanian devils. In fact, and in secret, M works for a biotech company. His mission: to secure genetic material from what may be the world's last remaining thylacine, reportedly sighted on the plateau. M must hide his true occupation from Lucy and her lonely children, Sass and Bike, as well as from the National Parks researchers and the suspicious local townspeople.

Lock and load tactical thermo nuclear weapons.

As the true central part of the state we have the average shortest distance to the best walks. A pleasent mountain near by to ski on as we look from that to the warm beaches of the Bay of Fires and back to Western Tiers where one can walk for miles (sorry young stuff, kilometres) until crossing the Lyell Highway :D and tackling the charms of Frenchmans Cap and the long stroll down to the South West Coast carefully avoiding Hobart.

Now soft, what is soft? Arh yes, two peak baging points for driving up Mount Wellington, courtesy of the Hobart Walking Clubs classification system. Now that is what I call soft   And what is the number of points for the highest day walk elevation gain close to Launceston?

As I once aksed then Premium, Big Red, what do you call a State bureacrat on the North West Coast, the answer is lost

Cheers Brett

Oh Brett, it's just so easy to pick on you.....
for starters, I have not climbed a mountain up near Launceston that offers views ANYWHERE near as good as the hundred or so available down here.
Secondly, 2 points for Wellington?? Where do you get that?

Check your facts first mate :)

Heh. BTW, it's ONE point for the drive up Welly, and TWO points for the drive up Snow Hill... :P If you're talking about Dry's Bluff then it's only 1, which I think is a bit steep (har har), but in reality is only a 4 hour return.

DAMN: this is so off topic it's not funny... well I hope the Tassie Tiger movie isn't like Antichrist, that was some *&%$#! up *&%$#!.

Oh I am sorry, the two points only are awarded if done in the back of a VW Beatle as a passanger of a would be rally driver

Views, oh you mean of EZ. Yes very pretty indeed  Nice to see you are getting your requried minerals, like lead, zinc, etc, etc

Mount Arthur near Launceston is a nice walk, just take care not to run into any antennas when on the top

Yes hundreds of mountains, Like Mount Nelson or anywhere else you can drive?

Well you might be better suited to Wellington, Mt Nelson etc etc, But us REAL walkers have places you may not have heard of like the Arthurs, Weld, Bobs, the Snowys, Mt Field The Denisons, Mt Anne, Mt Picton, Hartz.... Need I really go on??

Arthur was ok, a bit short for my liking tho, only took about 90mins return.
views were nothing special though :)

I think walker in the above context profixed by the word REAL should have been spelt with an "n" Let your knees not age and your ankes not twist with the passing of the years and then may the youthful song that you sing be still in tune with REAL world you face.
