America. Bushwalk out of there NOW!

Postby Le-Loup » Mon 12 Jul, 2010 12:08 pm

Things are looking very bad with this gulf oil disaster. Personally, if I were anywhere within several thousand miles of that place, I would be bushwalking out of there right now if the roads are blocked. I don't think this is too off topic, if at all. Bushwalkers probably stand the best chance of evacuating when the panic sets in. If nothing happens, good. But don't leave it too late to get out. Fingers crossed.

The US government have ordered a complete black out of media reporting on this. The coastline is already screwed. The chemicals used to kill the oil is worse than the oil. People are getting sick. This is the second BP disaster in April, not the first! Best scenario is that everyone in the area gets sick. Next scenario is a tsunami and gas clouds that can explode with lightening. Worst scenario is a total release of gasses which scientists say could be world distruction.
I am not a scare monger, but this apears to be the real thing. It is already far worse than BP and the government are letting on, and it could get a lot worse.

Either you guys are pulling my leg, or you have had your head buried somewhere. The oil rig that blew up in the gulf! The millions of gallons of oil that has been gushing out into the sea for months! 11 crew members killed, etc etc. It is big news on major networks, not just hearsay, and worth our while keeping track of.
Nuff said.

Neither am I, but you remember the gas bubble in the African lake some time ago, wiped out a village and stock? Well scientists say there is a bigger bubble where the oil rig is. This well is one of the deepest ever, and they were warned before hand. But it is also one of the richest oil reserves, and the financial gains outweighed security with BP and the US government. Scientists have a couple of scenarios if this present work releases this gas bubble, could be now, or six months time, or maybe not at all. But I think it is worth keeping track of, even if there is not much we can do about it.

Couldnt agree more. I certainly hope they (and the rest of the world) learn from this and nothing of the sort happens again. If it'd happened here in Australia the impact would be huge (not just for me) on places like the Barrier Reef or The Southern Ocean. Our Rock Lobster and Abalone fisheries would be devastated, just to name a couple of industries.

I know about the Deepwater Horizon "catastrophe" and the potential methane reserves being released and the possibility of lightening igniting the oil slick etc. etc. But "world destruction" I think might be a stretch.
It's much more likely that BP mostly caps the well with their current efforts and down the track, when the relief wells are finished, they will "bottom kill" it once and for all.
It's an ecological and economic disaster for the Gulf (not to mention BP), and perhaps a major health issue (who knows yet).

Remember how the first underwater nuclear explosion was going to tear a hole in the earth's crust and cause the oceans to be vapourised etc. etc.
And how we were all going to be sucked into a black hole when the Large Hadron Collider was started.
Lots of apocalyptic scenarios are possible, but few are remotley likely.

Yeah, Humans are such Nongs. You'd think we'd make sure we knew how to cap a pipe down there ( and I mean cap it fullstop.), before we even started drilling. Haha, we really are a bunch of wankers. We are lucky that other species don't have conscious thought, otherwise they would have made us extinct long ago. Ah - might go for a walk.

If only! We still do not have the technology that they have on other planets, we don't even know where they come from. We really are very primitive in comparison. But this really is getting off topic, unless we start a new one: Things I have seen whilst bushwalking.
