Family viewpoints on your bushwalking?

Mon 28 Jan, 2019 9:44 pm

I have always considered this a pretty good sport for couples and families but for the more extreme side of it there are differences in how interested or capable other family members are to accompany. How often do you find yourself walking with partners/children vs walking independantly?

Somewhere between rarely and never. Mrs is not interested but is far from fit enough in any case. I can very occasionally coax her to come on something very easy and very short, usually less than a couple of hours. 32 y.o. son and I used to walk together regularly during teens to mid twenties. We still do an occasional walk but he is focused on a very strong canyoning agenda with a wide circle of like minded individuals. So mostly it's just me, myself and I.

My wife is a capable multi-day walker. She can do any trip that I can do, and has sometimes come with me. But she has so many other things going on which she'd prefer to do, so she rarely bushwalks.

My partner is capable of many walks I do but prefers day walks or shortish 1 to 2 nights on tracks, definitely not a scrub basher. She has done the Overland Track and a bit kossie plus the UK coast to coast and is very supportive of me going walking. Perhaps she prefers me out from under her feet.

My wife loves sleeping under the stars - 5 stars!
I make a point of inviting her every time and then looking suitably disappointed when she declines.

Kids stopped bushwalking with me when they became teenagers.

I'm going bushwalking, anyone want to come along? No, OK, see ya.
Maybe 1 in 10 times, one of the kids will put up their hand mainly because they are bored, the wife never.

And then when my eldest daughter turned 20 and has a steady/serious boyfriend - multinight bushwalking is suddenly SO cool! Even with dad tagging along!

My youngest is 15yrs - so yes it's a quiet tolerance test for her at this stage...
