todays brain teaser- any divers here?

Thu 01 Nov, 2018 6:02 pm

Walking the shallows at low tide today, came across a bahco diving knife still in sheath with a few critters growing on it. It could not be drawn out as the knife had a cable tie securing the knifes hilt fast in the sheath. I though to myself, whats the point of a diving knife that needs another knife to cut it free? Not being a diver maybe there is a simple explanation to this.

The hilt is actually secured to the sheath in such a way that it cannot be withdrawn? It's not just a cable tie looped over the top of the sheath that can be slid off, for instance?

OK, that's just dumb. Dive knives usually have some sort of attachment to stop them falling out but, of necessity, it's one that can be released quickly and smoothly when needed.
Can you post a photo?

The knife was lost very soon after purchase, and had not had the cable tie cut off yet.

Probably. I've done a quick search on Bahco and they don't list a dive knife amongst their products. Stainless bladed knives in click sheaths, sure, but not something specifically designed for diving. Most likely it's gone off a boat rather than been lost by a diver.

Thanks that is one mystery solved= not a dive knife. This is it here, bahco mora 2444, should have looked it up before assuming a knife found near reef is a dive knife.https://www.tradetools.com/product-rang ... de-Swedish

Strange to have it cable tied in to the sheath. The blade had scratches and wear , it had been used on something hard at some point.

I have that knife and if it had a cable tie through that little triangular bulge on the sheath it was added after purchase as it is solid when new. Safety device around little kids perhaps?
I hope you salvaged it for use as it is a handy little blade, even if it can't strike a spark from a ferro rod

cheers moondog your guess sounds good enough to me. Once the guys above pointed out it wasn't a dive knife the cable tie on it went from seeming bizarre to just mildy puzzling.
