the thing is with ocean rowing is you really have to work with the weather and current patterns or you literally go backwards, Grant has people back home who are watching the conditions and advising him of the best options to take so he can weave his way in amongst it all and take the best route.
there was a crew rowing the Tasman sea and they literally went backwards for over a week. if yhou look at grants route on the map, you'll see he did a big dog leg north of Timor, because of the currents and then made a last minute decision to head for Dili when they did.
