Scottish referendum

Fri 19 Sep, 2014 3:35 pm

Is it all about cheap Scotch for the Scots?
It's the only valid reason I can see for dissolution of the unity

I thought it's about undies or no undies. Looks like undies won.

No it's about having free health care instead of private insurance mainly. Scotland is left field, while England is becoming more and more conservationist (like Australia). Also, historically, the Catholics want to be independent while Protestants don't.

Do you mean conservative, hallu? AFAIK Scotland is much more conservationist.

Yeah conservative sorry. Australia is actually NOT conservationist enough =) Scotland has offshore oil, and a good tertiary industry with banks and tourism. Their unemployment rate is very low for Europe, around 6%. So contrary to popular belief, they can definitely afford to be independent, and that doesn't mean they would leave the European Union. Most people who voted yes just want free health care for them and their family and are fed up with Cameron's ideas.

Given that Scots living outside of Scotland can't vote and all the English living in Scotland can vote, the result was really in doubt. It's the shock to the foundation of the empire, disintegrating from its core. Those 45% who wanted independence won't disappear.

Edit: Corrected "can't".

It was actually correct the first time . Not sure what the current statement is saying :?.
But to help with clarification I currently work with an expatriate Scot, who was sweating on the result all day.
And he did say that as a Scot not currently living in Scotland he couldn't vote.

AFAIK all the distilleries are now foreign owned, so it's not that!

It was a poll on whether people who live in Scotland genuinely hate the English or just pretend to.
