How good is the Virus?

Sun 29 Mar, 2020 7:19 pm

For a fumbling government,
how good is the virus!
Golden opportunity to address the nation, for regular press appearances, but takes a few weeks for the messages to clear up. Actual meetings of states, a national protocol influencing each citizen!

Let's not forget:

Climate change denial
Obstruction of renewable energy projects
Extended offshore detention
Massive land clearing
Fish dying in many rivers
Towns running out of water
Continued deforestation in Tasmania, Victoria, where else..?
The worst bushfires ever 2019 2020.
Increases in unconventional gas mining
Snowy 2.0 a budget blowout
Adani still has a chance at one tenth its size, but there are ten times more mines waiting in their wake
These are only the national FUps...
Throw in some Parks privatisation and ongoing lack of funding for NP too.

Sad you can't buy toilet paper? Can't go away for Easter, the kids are at home or your job has stopped for now?

Two billion people in the word (2 per 7) don't have a toilet. Think about it. Nowhere to poop today, in the morning, tomorrow.

Some positives:

More family time
Home time
People will prepare what they eat
Time in the garden
Sort out some life crap
Read stuff
Clean gear
Clear out gear via forums and Gumtree
Dehydrate
Relax

Great time to learn and improve OpenStreetMap so that when we are all back out there we have better data to carry with us.

Do we really have to go digital for nav?
How about collecting maps, photocopies for trips and just reminiscing trips...

I never travel with a map now. Just my phone with downloaded maps, a compass and a PLB. Be aware of your surroundings and look behind you at junctions. Take visual notes so if your phone fails, you can backtrack and get back ontrack.

Hmm my head doesn't quite connect with a digital topo screen when walking.
Love google maps for driving though! Gets me past a city.

What makes a massive difference is to be recording the trace as you walk, and having the trace displayed on the map. This gives a very fast and intuitive orientation of the map to one's surroundings (because you always know where you've just come from), even if the map is only matchbox-sized. However, without a trace it's often easier to use a paper map.

Doesn't work for me. I need to have a reasonably large scale map on hand to which I can refer. My brain refuses to hang on to detailed spatial information for more than a few seconds.

If it brings a few more people out of the woodwork to start solving things on their own, then some good will come of it. I think its opening a lot of eyes in the under 35 set who thought that there were adults in charge. Now that we have that gone, we can get some work done.

Adults in charge?
I just choked on my coffee.
How about learning how to draft a last will and testament, although mine will only be a will and disbursement document.
The thing I am having a problem with is starting any new projects, in my mind is the thought that why bother if I'm going to be dead next month.

Hey Moondog, remember that even for people with underlying conditions the most likely outcome is survival.

Maybe some food dehydrator owners here can take advantage of this experiment. After reading this helpful article, "Can disposable masks be reused after sterilization?" (link: https://www.imcclinics.com/english/inde ... view?id=83) I heated my disposable (used-for-one-hour) N95 mask, with no apparent damage, by sticking it in the old food dehydrator for 30 minutes on 70 degrees. (Hopefully, it's good for another shopping run or two.)

The environment gives a sigh of relief.

Sad though what goes on behind the scenes when the country is distracted. I'm expecting an all-out excuse to crank up the old style economy to pay the debts, when we could use this as an opportunity to restructure to more sustainable ways.
